On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, fighting between Allied Nations and Germany went into a temporary cessation.
November 11th, now known as Veterans Day, honors all the brave American military that have fought to defend our freedom. The history of Veterans day is truly interesting, and its an important day to reflect all the sacrifices those around us have made.
History of Veterans Day
In November 1919, United States President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed November 11 as the first commemoration of Armistice Day. Wilson stated that November 11 was to be a reflective day filled with pride. President Wilson always wanted Americans to remember the brave sacrifices those serving our country made in order to protect our freedom.
Honoring All American Military
While the original Veterans Day was celebrated to remember the lives of those in World War 1, it changed to honor all American military in 1954. On June 1, 1954, Public Law 380 passed to become a day to honor all American veterans of all wars. From World War 1 to our brave men and women serving overseas in Iraq and Afghanistan, Veterans Day is a somber reminder of all the sacrifices throughout America’s history that our brave men and women have made.
