Regulating Internal Temperature for Shipping Cases: Materials

internal temperature for shipping

Shipping temperature-sensitive materials can be tricky — learn about different materials in this week’s blog.

Welcome back to science class everyone! If you remember, last week in class we talked about how color can affect the internal temperature of a shipping case. This week we’re back to talk about how materials can affect temperature for shipping! Like we mentioned last week, custom case design is hugely important when shipping heat- or cold-sensitive items. Everyone get out your notebooks, because it’s time to learn about different materials for regulating internal temperature for shipping.

Shipping Case Materials

  • Wood: As far as wood goes, you can likely find a better option if you’re shipping temperature-sensitive cargo. Wood is a fairly decent insulator, but won’t keep temperature entirely stable when shipping through extreme temperature differences. It’s also susceptible to damage from humidity, which is another part of the weather to keep in mind for shipping delicate items.
  • Aluminum: Aluminum is actually highly resistant to temperature. Have you ever baked something on a cookie sheet lined with aluminum foil? It’s cool enough to touch almost immediately after coming out of a 350°+ oven! That’s the same aluminum that shipping cases are made out of to protect their contents and regulate internal temperature for shipping.
  • Plastic: Depending on the thickness and strength of the plastic, it can be surprisingly temperature resistant. We wrote recently about the wide variety of other benefits that plastic shipping cases offer, which may be a better fit than temperature regulation.
  • Insulated/Thermal: Obviously, if you’re in dire need of temperature regulation, there are insulated or thermal options to maintain the perfectly desired temperature throughout shipping. For shipping perishables or extremely delicate materials, this is going to be the way to go.

Of course, each of these materials bring different things to the table in categories other than temperature regulation. If you have any questions about choosing the right custom case solution for your shipping needs, don’t hesitate to give us a call.
